The University of Eldoret UNEVOC Centre was set up in 1996 on the advice of the UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre with the aim to assist the country develop and strengthen TVET through knowledge sharing, collaboration and joint activities.

The roles University of Eldoret UNEVOC Centre

The roles of the UoE UNEVOC Centre include and are not limited to:

1. Organizing national and regional network activities, in particular, to disseminate UNESCO TVET messages to TVET practitioners and to enable the exchange of information, experiences and lessons learnt among TVET experts;
2. Participating in events organized by UNESCO-UNEVOC and contributing to the collection of country data and reports on good practices, frameworks, innovations and models on TVET;
3. Collaborating with other UNEVOC Centres through networking;
4. Updating information pertaining to the institution on the UNEVOC website; and
5. Submitting reports upon request to UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre.

The Centre was endorsed by the Kenya National Commission for UNESCO (KNATCOM)

Roles of the UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training

The UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training is one of seven UNESCO institutes and centres working in the field of education. The International Centre is located at the United Nations Campus in Bonn, Germany and is financed by both UNESCO and the German government. UNESCO-UNEVOC is the International Centre for connecting UNESCO Member States worldwide to develop and strengthen Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). The International Centre undertakes its activities through a global network of TVET institutions comprising departments of ministries, national TVET bodies, Universities and nationally leading training centres. The International Centre defines itself as a hub facilitating the international collaboration between Centres, experts and stakeholders.

In this regard, UNESCO-UNEVOC organizes conferences, workshops, and expert meetings in the partner countries or at its premises in Bonn. The events gather experts and representatives from UNEVOC Centres, UNESCO institutions and other national and international partners. UNESCO-UNEVOC also provides online resources. Publications on TVET are completed by some field-recognized products like "TVETipedia" (an open TVET glossary), the "World TVET database" (TVET country profiles), and the "e-Forum", a mailing list and online discussion board for TVET experts. Besides its networking and knowledge management activity, the International Centre is known for its contribution to the field of sustainable TVET (also called "Greening TVET") and to the Education For All project. UNEVOC Centres are actively engaged in sharing knowledge with the Network.

Prof. John Simiyu is a Professor of Education in Technology Education. He has taught, supervised students and carried out research in TVET and related areas for over 30 years. Prof. Simiyu has published in renowned journals and attended and presented scholarly papers in national and international conferences. He is the coordinator of the UNEVOC Centre at University of Eldoret and is also the cluster coordinator of UNEVOC Centres in Eastern Africa.
