University of Eldoret Students Excel in Cyber Drill and AI Hackathon at Kenya Software & AI Summit 2025

University of Eldoret students have once again demonstrated their competency in digital innovation, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence by excelling at the Kenya Software and AI Summit 2025, held from 10–12 November 2025 at Moi University.

During the Summit, EldoHub hosted an AI Innovation Challenge & Hackathon, focused on using AI, technology, and innovation to transform athletics management and performance. The main objective of the hackathon was to develop AI-driven solutions that can transform athletics management and performance.  A team of students from University of Eldoret with their “OptiFuel” innovation emerged overall winners of the hackathon. Their innovations is an AI-driven solution designed to help athletes plan their meals, using artificial intelligence to predict appropriate meals for different training and performance needs.

From an initial pool of 20 teams from different institutions in Eldoret, OptiFuel took the top position and received a cash prize of KSh 50,000. The second and third-placed teams each received KSh 25,000. Team OptiFuel consisted of the following students from the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science:

The summit also featured a national Cyber Drill organised by the Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy, in collaboration with CYBER RANGES. Participants were presented with a realistic cyberattack scenario and tasked to identify the source of the attack and devise effective strategies to contain and resolve the incident. Students from the University of Eldoret stood out for their exceptional performance in accurately identifying the attacker and demonstrating a strong understanding of the attack execution process and incident response.

The outstanding performance of University of Eldoret students at the Software Summit aligns with the University’s vision of nurturing graduates who are not only academically excellent but also innovative, and industry ready. The students were accompanied by Dr. Emily J. Chemoiwa, the acting HOD, Intellectual Property Management, Albert Onyango, John Slater, and Jack Kuoku Olubayo from the ICT Directorate, and Dr. Albert Bii and Mr. Julius Kogo from the School of Science, Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. The University will continue to support student innovators by providing mentorship and incubation support, exploring intellectual property protection where applicable, and facilitating participation in national and regional innovation platforms.
