Competence Based Education Training with KICD

The School of Education, through the CBE Preparedness Committee, is dedicated to ensuring that the University faculty is equipped for the transition in 2029, where we will welcome the first cohort of CBE students. On the third day of the workshop, the facilitators from Kenya Institute for Curriculum Development (KICD) - Dr. Josephat Miheso, Mr. Patrick Andika, and Mr. Arthur Mdoga - guided the CBE Champions through a series of interactive sessions. These sessions concentrated on Competency Based Assessment and the Realignment to University Curricula to CBE Implementation Strategies and Best Practices.

The training was officially closed by the Ag. Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Students’ Affairs), Prof. Samuel Lutta. In his address, Prof. Lutta emphasized that the division would ensure that all teaching and non-teaching staff involved in the curriculum process would be trained in Competency Based Education (CBE). “In today’s rapidly evolving world, the importance of a well-constructed curriculum cannot be overstated,” he remarked. He reiterated that a robust curriculum equips with the essential tools to think critically, solve complex problems and engage meaningfully with the whole around them. He articulated that Curriculum-Based Education transcends the academic content—it encompasses multifaceted components that contribute to a learner’s journey including teaching methodologies, assessment strategies, the integration of technology, and the broader cultural and social context within which learning occurs. He reminded the CBE Champions that the future of education was in our hands, and collectively, a curriculum that prepares students for success in an interconnected and rapidly evolving global society can be forged. He expressed his gratitude to the facilitators for their comprehensive training program and assured them that the University will support both teaching and non-teaching staff in achieving all established CBE preparedness objectives within the designated timelines.
