School of Agriculture and Biotechnology Profile

The School of Agriculture and Biotechnology (SAGR) is one of the premier schools at the University of Eldoret renowned for being among the topmost in delivering academic programs, agricultural research, innovation and extension services. The School offers competitive agricultural-based courses tailor-made to satisfy the growing market demand in agriculture. These programs are offered at various levels as short courses and certificates, Diploma, Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate.

The School is involved in a number of research activities and extension services through collaborations with government, non-governmental research institutions and private service providers to test and deliver cutting edge technologies and products to the farming communities, soil testing and site-crop fertilizer recommendations being a lead community-based service. Through collaborations with partners at the University, the department of Agricultural Biotechnology has over the past years participated in developing varieties to meet the agricultural needs and demands for food and nutrition, medicinals, fuel, ornamentals, and textiles.

The various crop varieties developed and released to farmers for commercialization are: 4 Dolichos; 2 Wheat (Eldo Mavuno, Eldo Baraka); 3 Cassava (ELDOCAS1, ELDOCAS2, and ELDOCAS3); and 3 Potatoes (Eldo Amani, Eldo Fanaka), with an ongoing project on pyrethrum breeding. The department's continued efforts in quality teaching, crop breeding and development are crucial for ensuring food security and promoting economic growth in the agricultural sector.  These collaborations have seen a number of MoUs signed between the partners and the university which have enabled the school to achieve invaluable benefits rippling from improved infrastructure (laboratory and equipment), awarding of MSc and PhD graduate scholarships and securing greater networks for undergraduate student industrial attachments. In a bid to address the emerging issues, the school has continually embraced multi-disciplinary research approaches through strengthening linkages within and outside the school that have yielded remarkable output and outcomes. To foster capacity building of the community, the school organizes a number of workshops and training to communicate findings and demonstrate new technologies.
