Strengthening Student Accommodation at University of Eldoret

It is once again that defining moment of the year — when thousands of young Kenyans stand at the crossroads of choice, purpose, and possibility. Over two hundred thousand students who have attained the minimum university entry grade of C+ are thoughtfully considering their programme options, while others explore alternative academic and professional pathways. In this season of decision-making, one truth remains constant: the choices made today lay the foundation for tomorrow’s careers and lives.

The University of Eldoret remains committed to providing a supportive and conducive learning environment for all its students. Situated in Uasin-Gishu County—Kenya’s renowned breadbasket—the University continues to grow as a vibrant academic and cultural hub. Since receiving its charter in 2013, it has expanded steadily, currently serving 17,050 students and producing over 35,000 alumni who are making meaningful contributions across Kenya and beyond.

With regard to accommodation and related facilities, the University acknowledges the concerns that have been raised and appreciates the feedback from students and other stakeholders. Like many public institutions operating within finite resources, there are areas that call for ongoing improvement. Encouragingly, this feedback continues to inform deliberate interventions by the University Council and Management aimed at enhancing student welfare and the overall campus experience.

Notably, there is currently an ongoing hostel development project that will add approximately 1,200 bed spaces. This initiative, a direct donation by the Government of Kenya through the Affordable Housing Programme, is expected to significantly strengthen accommodation capacity and improve living standards on campus.

This development complements the existing 2,000 bed spaces within the University, which are primarily allocated to first-year students, as well as additional housing options facilitated through carefully vetted partnerships within the surrounding community to ensure safety, affordability, and acceptable standards.

We encourage all stakeholders to engage with this matter in a balanced and constructive manner. While social media provides an important platform for expression, it may not always present the full context. Meaningful and lasting solutions are best achieved through structured engagement—via official communication channels, student leadership forums, and institutional processes.

The University of Eldoret remains steadfast in its mission to nurture talent, expand knowledge, and shape future leaders. As we listen attentively to concerns raised, we remain equally committed to continuous improvement, integrity, and excellence in serving our students and the wider community.
