University of Eldoret Students Excel at Eldoret City Innovation Challenge & International Youth Day Hackathon held in Uasin Gishu County

True to our motto – the Flame of Knowledge and Innovation, University of Eldoret students achieved top honors at two national events – the Eldoret City Innovation Challenge 2025 and the International Youth Day Hackathon held in Uasin Gishu County.

The Eldoret City Innovation Challenge took place from 6th - 8th August with training and mentorship session for particpants who then pitched on 9th August 2025. The event that was organized by EldoHub in collaboration with Konza Technopolis and several key partners, brought together some of the brightest young minds across the region. The event aimed to identify innovative solutions addressing urban challenges, sustainability, and technology integration.

University of Eldoret’s students showcased various projects, such as SANA by Kimberly Amira - a smart health-monitoring platform designed to provide accessible and affordable diagnostic services through mobile technology. SANA secured 3rd place, winning a cash prize alongside multiple awards sponsored by the SMACH Foundation, which supports social impact ventures.
Another remarkable innovation was MtiCarbo, created by Joseph Ekisa and Kariuki Waitherero. This innovation focuses on climate action by using tree-planting data analytics and carbon offset tracking to help local communities and businesses monitor and reduce their carbon footprints. MtiCarbo earned 4th place and was granted an exclusive invitation to pitch their project at the prestigious AfricaArena Climate Summit 2025, positioning them for potential partnerships and funding opportunities on a continental scale.

Following the City Challenge, University of Eldoret’s wins continued at the International Youth Day Hackathon in Uasin Gishu County on 11th August 2025. The hackathon spotlighted solutions aimed at empowering youth and boosting local economies through technology. AgroShield by Joseph Ekisa, an AI-powered mobile application developed to support smallholder farmers, took the 2nd place in the hackathon. The app offers an offline crop disease diagnostic tool that quickly identifies infections and pest threats, enabling timely intervention even in areas with limited internet access. Additionally, AgroShield connects farmers directly to agrovet suppliers, facilitating access to quality inputs and fostering stronger agricultural value chains. The team was awarded tablet devices to support further development and field testing of their innovation.
