SMBE Regional Symposium on Evolutionary Genomics for Africa 2026

With the support of the Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution (SMBE), the University of Eldoret, in collaboration with Moi University hosted the Regional Symposium on Evolutionary Genomics for Africa 2026.  The symposium was held at the Noble Hotel from 18th to 20th May, 2026, and featured presentations and plenary discussions across the sub themes. Featuring 7 different sub themes, the symposium brought together Scientists from different regions of the world, who deliberated the importance of genomics, different genomics techniques and platforms across different fields, associated challenges and opportunities for collaborations and building of research networks on the continent. It also provided a good forum for post graduate students from different countries and Kenyan Universities and research institutes to present their research findings and network. Delegates from different parts of the world who could not travel to Eldoret presented their research work online.

The sub-themes were:

  1. Genomics and biodiversity conservation
  2. Genomics in crop improvement and production
  3. Genomics in animal breeding
  4. Evolutionary genomics in fisheries: Rapid diversification of cichlids of the Great Lakes of Africa
  5. Genomics and evolution of antimicrobial resistance in agriculture, medicine and environment
  6. Genomics in diagnosis, surveillance and management of diseases and epidemics
  7. The African Biogenome Project

The symposium was officially opened by the Vice Chancellor, University of Eldoret, represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (ASA) Prof. Netondo, and closed officially by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (PRE) Prof. Philip Raburu.
