The Outreach Centre hosted the Youth Open Day with the theme “Promoting Youth Involvement in Innovations and Agripreneurship”. The Outreach Center Hub for this event fell under the Smart Water Use for Agriculture (SWA).
Under the SWA hub, the OC has been mandated to act as a host for the Uasin Gishu Irrigation Acceleration Platform (UG-IAP) through the role of facilitating interactions amongst individuals, institutions, organizations and companies – who have a stake in Smart Water solutions for agriculture. UG-IAP is an initiative of the Smart Water Agriculture Project facilitated by the Netherlands government through SNV Kenya. The Platform, launched on June 13th, 2017, has the main objective of contributing to improved livelihoods among Small and Medium Enterprise farmers in Uasin Gishu County through Smart Water Solutions.
Among the OC activities in SWA is promoting youth to undertake agriculture as a business and creating a platform for the use of smart water solutions.
The Youth Open Day event focused on Irrigation Acceleration Platform for Youth in Agribusiness. The centre hosted over 80 youth from 39 Youth Groups in the County. They were taken through presentations and exhibitions by various stakeholders in the financial and agribusiness sectors who included Kenya Seed, KEPHIS, ECLOF Kenya, Equity Bank, Lengo Training Institute, Sunculture, Grekkon, SNV Netherlands Nairobi office and University of Eldoret.
The event was opened by Prof. Wilson Ng’etich - the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration and Finance) on behalf of Prof. Teresa Akenga - the Vice-Chancellor. In attendance was the Uasin Gishu County CEC Agriculture – Mr. Samuel Yego, U.G. County Engineer – Eng. Janet Kirui, the SNV Advisor Manager – Ms. Vandana Thotolli and Sub-County Agricultural Officers from the 6 Sub-Counties in Uasin Gishu County.
