University Scoops Key Prizes in Five different Categories at the Eldoret ASK Show


Agricultural Society of Kenya (ASK) was founded in the early 1901 with the main objective of promoting agricultural development based on European Settlement. The Shows were tailored to be a shop window for prospective buyers both from local surroundings and international markets. The Shows which are conducted based on regions has seen a major transformation over the years and it has been ideal in improving the level of agricultural growth within the country.

The Eldoret Agricultural Society of Kenya (ASK) Show whose theme was Promoting Innovation and Technology in Agriculture and Trade was conducted on 6th-9th March 2019. The Show which was opened by the Chief Guest Dr. Andrew Tuimur, The Chief Administrative Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Irrigation saw the University of Eldoret being awarded in five different categories.

The University of Eldoret through its exhibitions managed to scoop 1ST prizes in two categories:

  • The best University Stand.
  • The best Stand that interpreted the current Show theme.

In addition, the University won 2nd position in three categories:

  • The second best stand in Research and Development.
  • The second best Innovation and invention stand.
  • The second best Innovation in youth activities, empowerment and capacity building.

While presenting the University with the 1st prizes in the two categories, the Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Hon. Mwangi Kiunjuri who was accompanied by the Governor of Uasin Gishu County Hon Jackson Mandago commended the University’s efforts and called on institution of higher learning to be central in enhancing innovative and research within the agricultural sector.

This year’s Eldoret ASK show was aimed at encouraging exhibitors to exhibit rich information on current business practices, give career advices to local farmers and offer financial information and advice to the participants.

The University of Eldoret as a premier University in offering Science, Agricultural and Technological courses was well represented during this year Eldoret ASK Show. The University exhibited a variety of exhibition from the different schools as listed in the table below, which was ideal in advertising and marketing the University during the Show.

School of Business and Management Sciences Contribution of indigenous ‘food’ cuisine to promote health and performance of catering.
School of Environmental and management planning.
  • Testing of environmental Toxicity using Xenopus leavies (African frog),
  • Biosand filter for water purification,
  • Rain gauge for data collection used for weather prediction,
  • Stereoscope for interpreting Arial maps.
School of Education
  • Modern House model designs.
  • Hydraulic press (pressing), slider crank (measuring material strength), spurs gear production (motor vehicle engine) and use from mechanical section.
School of Engineering
  • Affordable housing by the use of expanded polystyrene wall and slab panels in realization of big four agendas.
  • Solar drier in promoting food security.
  • Concentrated solar sill for promoting manufacturing
North rift herbalist association in collaboration with School of Science
  • Traditional medicine research, training, Botanical conservation and development of cultural centers.
  • Developing policy to protect their product from bio piracy. Selling of their product was at an affordable price.
Bookshop
  • Is an Income generating unit for the university, selling books and various stationeries to all departments in the University.
  • Showcased various items used to market and brand university during events such as t-shirts, Umbrellas, Executive pens, boots, shirts etc.
Outreach
  • Mushroom production using simplest technology of mixing sawdust and maize stalk.
  • Yoghurt production from local farmers
  • Fireless Jiko used for incubating/ferment yoghurt. Can also be used for cooking.
  • Peanut production using three locally made machines. Thus: Electric roaster, Grain Flour mill and Electic Decorticator
School of Agriculture and Biotechnology
  • Ingredients that constitute daily meal, cross breeding and dairy goats.
  • Grafting technologies for efficient and sustainable avocado for production and development of seedling under limited space and off season.
  • Nutrition management under fertilizer response and soil analysis services.
  • Showcasing Eldo-Mavuno and Eldo-Baraka drought and rust resistance varieties.
  • Processing and adding values/Value addition of food products.
  • Advise on how to manage and prevent lifestyles diseases.
  • Showcasing various fashion and lifestyle technologies.
  • Soil Nutrients management under fertilizer in relation to fertilizer response and soil analysis.
  • School of Natural Resource
  • Production of fingering and aqua culture practicing.
  • Converting trees into usable facilities/products.
  • Library
  • Collect update information and provision to staff, students and community.
  • Provided data using online database like Agora, and stand-alone database like TEAL.
  • Showcased Screen magnification software with speech for visually impaired (MAGic) and Screen Reading Software for blind and visually impaired (JAWS)
  • School of Science
    • Albino rats (more related to human beings) used to tests different types of medicine and practical’s to identify various types of systems in the body.
    • Different methods of preserving insects for research and practical i.e. butterfly and beetles insect box.
    • Use of natural plants to determine the soil pH examples turmeric, beetroot, red cabbage, vinegar and baking powder.
    • Different types of mushroom production showing different nutrition values which include medicinal and diet and how to prepare them.
